Relationship between mid upper arm circumference and weight changes in children aged 6-59 months.
BACKGROUND The objectives of this study were to (i) describe the relationship between weight changes and MUAC changes in children aged between 6 and 59 months during treatment for SAM in CMAM programmes in three country contexts (Malawi, Ethiopia and Bangladesh) admitted using MUAC and (ii) describe the sensitivity of both MUAC and weight to episodes of disease experienced during the SAM treatm...

OBJECTIVE To compare the performance of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) against weight-for-height Z-score (WHZ) for predicting inpatient deaths in children under 5 years of age. DESIGN Diagnostic test accuracy study. SETTING Paediatric emergency department of a tertiary care hospital catering to semi-urban and rural population in Delhi, India. متن کاملComparison of Clinical Characteristics and Treatment Outcomes of Children Selected for Treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition Using Mid Upper Arm Circumference and/or Weight-for-Height Z-Score
OBJECTIVES Debate for a greater role of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measures in nutritional programming continues, but a shift from therapeutic feeding programs admitting children using MUAC and/or weight-for-height Z (WHZ) to a new model admitting children using MUAC only remains complicated by limited information regarding the clinical profile and response to treatment of children sele...
متن کاملAssessment of severe malnutrition among hospitalized children in rural Kenya: comparison of weight for height and mid upper arm circumference.
CONTEXT Severe malnutrition has a high mortality rate among hospitalized children in sub-Saharan Africa. However, reports suggest that malnutrition is often poorly assessed. The World Health Organization recommends using weight for height, but this method is problematic and often not undertaken in practice. Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) and the clinical sign "visible severe wasting" are si...
متن کاملMid upper Arm Circumference for Detection of Severe Acute Malnutrition in Infants Aged Between One and Six Months.
This study conducted among 302 infants aimed to determine the most suitable mid upper arm circumference cutoff to diagnose severe acute malnutrition (weight-for-length <-3 SD) in infants aged between 1 and 6 months. The cut off of 11.0 cm had the best performance (Youden index 0.63, sensitivity 82.5%, specificity 80.3%).
